The announcement of a new Lidl supermarket for Houghton Regis was greeted with enthusiasm earlier this year, and building commenced in September 2021. The Drainflow drain clearance team was called in once the construction was complete to carry out drain clearance on the supermarket’s foul and surface water drains.

Foul Water Drainage

What distinguishes foul water drainage from surface water drainage is the origin of the water and waste running through it. Foul water comes from inside a building (toilets, sinks, appliances) and it travels through the drainage system on its way to the sewers to be treated.

Surface Water Drainage

Also known as a ‘storm drain’, surface water drainage collects the water from gutters, driveways, roads, pavements, and roofs. As this is water that doesn’t contain waste, it can be allowed to run off into watercourses, rather than being treated in sewers.

Drainflow Carries Out Drain Inspection and Cleaning

Drains on construction sites need to be cleared before the public can start using the new building/s. This is because the construction process can introduce cement, screed or concrete into the drain system causing potential blockages. Drain clearance involves two procedures: CCTV drain survey, and drain jetting.

  • CCTV Drain Survey. This is used to check the interior of the drain for blockages or accretions that need to be cleared. The procedure involves use of CCTV technology, mounted on a remote-controlled ‘crawler’ platform. Our HD camera provides 360º imaging from the interior of the pipework, which is relayed to a surface monitor.
  • Drain Jetting. Once we know where to focus, Drainflow engineers use drain jetting hoses to blast out the blockages. The water jets, which can exceed 3000psi, are powerful enough to dislodge wedged objects, clear accretions clinging to the pipework, and flush any mud or silt that’s built up out of the system.
