How do Drain Unblockers Work?

Chemical vs. Enzyme Unblockers – What Really Clears Your Drains?

How do drain unblockers work? It all depends on what type you’re using, and most fall into two camps – chemical or enzyme. Chemicals use corrosion to decompose the materials causing the clog, such as hair, grease or food. Enzymes use bacteria to “digest” organic waste, which is a slower process but gentler on pipes.

Both chemical and enzyme unblockers are short-term fixes, in that they’re designed to find a way through a blockage rather than remove it completely. If you’re looking for a guaranteed, long-lasting solution, you’ll need professional drain clearance to flush the entire system.

Drainflow is a drain clearance specialist and clearing blocked drains for the long-term is what we’ve been doing for over 20 years. Our expertise is built on real-world experience, not just reading labels. We want you to have the facts – an expert, impartial view on which solutions actually work – before you have spend money on a fix that doesn’t actually do what you need it to.

Choosing the Right Unblocker for Your Blockage

To get any results from a shop-bought unblocker, you need to have the right product for the job. The chemicals that tackle hair are different from the enzymes that digest food waste. Before you go to the supermarket, use our guide to decide what kind of blockage you’re dealing with and what product you need to get results.

1. Hair and Soap (Bathroom Sinks and Showers)

You’ll need a chemical (alkaline) unblocker. Look for ingredients like sodium hydroxide.

Hair is made of a tough protein called keratin. Alkaline formulas use a corrosive chemical reaction to break down and dissolve both the hair and the soap that binds it together. It turns the solid blockage into a liquid that can be flushed through.

2. FOG – Fat, Oil, and Grease (Kitchen Sinks)

Use an enzyme-based drain maintainer or biological unblocker.

Never use a powerful chemical unblocker on kitchen grease. The chemicals just liquefy the fat, which then reforms as a solid block further down your system. A biological enzyme solution is by far the better choice – it introduces enzymes and “good” bacteria that digest the organic waste, breaking some of it down permanently rather than just relocating the problem.

3. Blocked Toilets

Never use drain unblockers on your toilet. Use a toilet plunger instead.

Toilet blockages are usually physical (too much paper, wet wipes, or sanitary products) and chemicals just can’t dissolve these. Even worse, the chemicals can react violently, splashing back corrosive material, or generating extreme heat that can crack the bowl. Toilet blockages need a manual plunger or professional removal.

4. Outside Drains (Leaves, Mud, and Garden Debris)

Blocked outside drains need a physical approach using either drain rods or drain jetting.

Chemical unblockers are designed for internal organic waste, not piles of wet leaves, mud, stones, or silt. You can’t dissolve this type of blockage with chemicals. The leaves, or mud must be physically removed by hand, with rods, or (if deep in the pipe) with professional high-pressure drain jetting.

Physical Tools for Tough Blockages – Plungers or Rods vs. Water Jetting

For toilets and outside drains your only option is to physically break up or move the blockage that’s causing the problem. Some simple blockages can be fixed with basic tools others require professional power. Here’s an explanation of some physical methods you can try and the professional solutions Drainflow uses.

How to Use a Toilet Plunger
  • How to Use a Toilet Plunger

The secret to plunging is creating a hydraulic seal. You need a large bulb or flange plunger (not a simple sink cup) that covers the entire hole. Make sure the flange is completely in the water (add water from the sink if you need to). Form a tight seal against the porcelain and use firm, rhythmic vertical pumps. You are using water pressure to dislodge the clog.

This only works on blockages within the U-bend – it has no effect on issues further down the line.

  • How to Use Drain Rods

Drain rods are flexible rods you screw together to physically push through a blockage, usually in an external drain. You assemble them one by one, always turning them clockwise (even when pulling back) to ensure the sections don’t unscrew and get lost in the drain.

Rods are not easy to use unless you have experience with them. They can easily get stuck, break, or just punch a small hole in the blockage leaving most of it behind.

  • High-Pressure Drain Jetting

This is the only method that doesn’t just clear the blockage – it cleans the entire pipe. We use specialist flexible drain jetting hoses that propel a multi-directional jetter head forward using extreme water pressure (up to 4000 PSI).

This jet doesn’t just puncture the blockage – it cuts through roots, destroys solid grease, and scours the pipe clean, flushing all debris away to restore full flow.

  • Why We Use a CCTV Drain Survey

We’re not in the business of guessing at Drainflow. Before or after jetting, we feed a remote-control, waterproof camera into your drains. This CCTV drain survey allows us to pinpoint the exact location, nature, and severity of the blockage.

We can see if it’s roots, a pipe collapse, or just grease. This approach means we use the right jetting head, apply the right pressure, and confirm the pipe is 100% clear (and undamaged) afterwards.

When to DIY vs. When to Call the Experts

Shop-bought unblockers have a really specific, limited use. For a simple bathroom sink blockage, the right chemical might buy you some time. But for kitchen grease, toilets, external drains, or any blockage that keeps coming back, they are a waste of money and potentially hazardous to your pipes.

A lasting solution scours the entire pipe clean of the residue that caused the problem. That is what professional drain jetting, informed by a CCTV inspection, is designed to do.
