Case Study – Drain Blockage in Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire
Roots clogging up drains is one of the most common problems Drainflow engineers encounter, especially in rural locations. So when we were called out to Barton-le-Clay to investigate a blocked drain on the industrial estate, we guessed what the problem would be. Tree roots are attracted to the moisture running through pipes and push through joints or cracks to access it.
CCTV Drain Survey
Despite the fact we thought we knew what we were dealing with, we still needed to pinpoint the blockage and confirm our suspicions. So we carried out a CCTV drain survey. Our wheel-mounted, remote-controlled CCTV camera was able to penetrate the foul drain and send HD images back to a surface monitor. Drainflow engineers were able to see the extent of the root ingress, check out damage to the pipes, and know exactly where the problem lay.
In this instance the pipework wasn’t badly damaged, so we were able to remove the blockage using specialist drain jetting equipment designed to clear roots. Our high pressure hoses are flexible enough to navigate the twists and turns of a drainage system, whilst blasting in excess of 3000psi through the pipe work.
The mess of roots we removed from the pipe really didn’t look like they were capable of major damage. Once they find their way into pipes, though, roots not only create blockages, they can also severely damage the drain system. If not caught early root ingress can require excavation work to remediate the problem.
Drainflow engineers were able to leave this drainage system free-flowing and in good shape.
